The one useful thing I've learned from Rachael Ray

You may think she taught me how to make a delicious and nutritious meal in 30 minutes or less, but she didn't. In fact, I think I've made maybe one or two of her dishes and I wasn't all that impressed. Could it be that she has broadened my vocabulary with the addition of such words as delish, sammy and yummo? Not likely. If I did use them, they would be heavily laden with sarcasm and in the context of making fun of something. Did I discover how to use acronyms, such as EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)? Yeah right. I'm of the belief that you use acronyms instead of the actual words not in conjunction. So what tidbit of knowledge did I gain you ask??

Behold, the garbage bowl! I realize it is a bit anticlimactic, but it is the best! Dinners at my house are often frantically prepared immediately after we walk in the door at 5:30pm. This frenzy makes for tornado-like messes of items strewn all over the counter. This little tip saves me at least 20 minutes of cleanup and running to and from the trash can while I cook. When I'm done cooking, I pull out anything that needs to be tossed in the recycling (or compost bin if I'm not being lazy) and my cleanup is a snap. Anything that can cut down on my total time spent doing chores is a win in my book! Give it a try. You'll thank me. Or Rachael. If you can stand to be smiled to death.

  1. I mostly can't stand Rachel Ray - I agree why say EVOO if you are going to define it every time!! And her recipes are only 30 minutes if you can chop like a professional and if you have someone prep for you :). I have one of her cook books - its useless - half of the ingredients are things I would never usually buy and have to be purchaed in amounts so much more than what I need that 1/2 of it goes bad....ugh

anyway...enough of my Rachel Ray rant :) I do have to say that I embraced the garbage bowl long ago :) I love it!! I usually actually have 2 - one for eveything that will be composted and then one for everything else. I don't think I got it from her, but I can't remember who from....

  2. Oh that is good. I usually just make a pile on the counter and when I am done I throw it away. But you have inspired me to break out a bowl. Great idea. Saves getting your hands all messy again too. Thanks for sharing.

  3. This is a great tip - just found your blog and I love it. Your letters of intent made me laugh out loud a couple of minutes ago!

  4. That really is a great idea. I will have to start trying that one. I personally can only take a few minutes of her too. I've never found a recipe of hers that I liked. I have yet to figure out why people like her so much.

  5. Hmm...I will have to try that one too! The only useful tip from Ms. Annoying!

  7. I used (key wold is USED) to ADORE Rachel Ray & watched her shows like it was my job. Loved her.
Then, I don't know. About a year ago, I really felt that she was making food with an odd combination of ingredients. She would be putting things in a pot, and I would be thinking to myself, even if I smother that in melted cheese my husband isn't going to eat it, let alone my toddler.
It always seemed like she was cooking meals with things that I never seem to have on hand, things that are way to hard to locate in the grocery store. And, don't even get me started on the money it would cost to duplicate the cuts of meats she uses. Oye!

And, her voice. Good golly what the heck is up with her voice. It sounds like she smokes 3 packs of camel non-filters a day.

Oh - and don't even get me started on her husband.

(wow....where did that crazy rant come from)

SO, in-spite of that crazy rant above, I did adopt using a garbage bowl years ago. It really does make clean up 10x easier. ;)

  8. Me too!!!! Oh yes, me too! The one and only brilliant thing to come from her. And it truly is brilliant. I can't for the life of me figure out why I didn't think of it before her.

  9. I don't do the garbage bowl, but toss everything in the sink....

I do wonder why is Rachel Ray famous...so many people find her so annoying!

  10. OMG! That is brilliant because I spend most of the time in the kitchen chopping, then throwing out stuff! Love it!

I don't care for Rachel. My friend worked on the set she filmed those Dunkin Donuts commercials last year and he referred to her as "terror on heels"!

Yep she was a capital BEE when the cameras stopped rolling! Figures!

  11. You are hilarious! I just wrote about my special needs when it comes to cooking, but I do like to watch people cook, and I am a great critic. I've never been impressed with Rachael Ray. (What's with the extra "a"?) Maybe she can make a meal in 30 minutes, but she's sweating the whole time. Shouldn't cooking be a bit more relaxing? She struggles HARD to get it done in time, so I don't really believe 30 minutes is possible.

Anyway, I like this idea of the garbage bowl! I'm going to try it!

  12. I buy compost bags (like small trash bags, but biodegradable) and throw everything in there. I keep it clipped under the sink and toss it when it's full (usually 2 days.) Since our city ROCKS on the recycling front, I can throw all of my food waste into our yard waste bin. Love it! I've even gotten Chad on board. But I hated the muck that exposed food created in our bin... thus, came the compost bags.
