Random Photo Challenge: Halloween Edition

For this photo challenge we are supposed to post our favorite Halloween picture. I love this picture of the kids. The poor baby was too chubby for the body suit. She wasn't even a year and she was popping the snaps that ran up the inside of the legs. It was supposed to be an 18-24 month size! The head, however, was gigantic and required modification to not swim on her little melon. I love my little Buzz and alien girl!

100 Random Things about me

I'm not conceited enough to think you might be hanging on the edge of your seat to know 100 random facts about me, but it's my blog, so here we go...

Fall in New England

I'm a California girl. Fall never really meant much to me. Nothing really fell. Sure, it got a little cooler and some of the trees would drop their leaves, but I went trick-or-treating in spaghetti straps and tutus. I didn't own a winter coat until I moved out here. Scarfs and mittens, ha!, I didn't know anything about them. We'd go get our apples and pumpkins from the grocery store or "pumpkin patch" which was like a Christmas tree lot, but with pumpkins. I love that my kids get to experience what fall really means.
It's cable knit tights and knee high boots, rows of pumpkins that you get from the farm where they grew, apples hand-picked from the tree and turned into warm pie, tractor rides and corn mazes, and so much more.

I  love this time of year when the leaves change to golden yellow, warm orange, and fiery red as the trees prepare to sleep the winter away.

I'm not a fan of winter here, but I truly LOVE the fall!

Saturday top 5 laughs

I feel like my kids get funnier each week. Arielle is in that phase where she says things wrong and that is always good for a laugh. Nate is, well, a clown at heart, so he is always cracking us up. Here are the top 5 from this week:

1. While driving home from daycare Arielle started singing The Farmer in the Dell. When she got to the part that should have said, "The cheese stands alone" she paused and then said, "The cheese stands by he's self". To make it even funner she added "The mom runs away" to the song. With both kids sick for 4 days a piece last week I have to admit, I had thought about it once or twice!

2. We took Nate on a date and let him pick the restaurant. He chose BBQ and so we went to Texas Roadhouse. He ordered a salad and I told him he was really growing up and it was breaking my heart. He looked puzzled and asked why it breaks my heart. I told him that he'll eventually grow up and move away. He replied, "I am NEVER moving out!" I mentioned that he will have more chores as he gets older to which he responded, "I'm DEFINITELY moving out then". When I told him that he'd have to do ALL of the chores when he moves out, he went back to his previous statement of never.

3. While we waited for the bill, Nate asked me to take a picture of him. He made sure to make the silliest faces ever and asked to approve of the picture I posted.

4. Nate's hair was getting long (see above) so it was time to get a hair cut. We went to our friend's salon and it is not exactly a kid's place. He sat down in the big chair and the lady next to him asked him why he was there. He told her, "Because I look like a ragamuffin".

5. Arielle likes to say our full names now, but she says it out of order every time. She always says the middle name, last name and then first name. She's so proud and cute that I don't have the heart to correct her.

Gutzy Gear Party and Giveaway

My son started Kindergarten this year and we were thrust into the world of school supplies, lunch boxes, and backpacks. I wanted a quality back pack that would last, but that limited us a bit when it came to the fun factor. Say hello to Gutzy Gear! I discovered this awesome company at BlogHer and knew my kids would love their products. They make backpack strap covers and removable patches that you can mix and match. What a fun way to personalize and jazz up a bag or backpack.
This weekend we had some friends over and introduced them to Gutzy Gear. The kids loved picking Gutzys for their backpacks! We played Bingo and the winner got to chose their patches first. The competition was fierce. :)  Even the kids that didn't bring backpacks got creative and put their covers on their arms. What I think I like the best about Guzty Gear is they are not permanent. My kids change their minds almost as much as their clothes so the option to switch out the patches is great. The velcro is really strong too so the patches stay in place and won't just fall off.
I have some Gutzy Gear prize packs to give away!  6 sets to be exact! The set comes with 2 strap covers and 3 Gutzy patches. I have 2 girl, 2 boy and 2 unisex sets up for grabs! 6 winners means great odds!

Running: A year in review

On Sunday I ran in my 6th road race. When I think about that, it makes me so proud of how far I have come. All 6 of the races have been in the last year. Before that I wasn't a runner. I started using the Couch to 5k program in June of 2011. I wasn't exactly at "couch" level when I started, but I couldn't run 3 consecutive miles at that point either. I did my first 5k last October, the PRMH 5k Women's classic. I am on the community outreach committee at my work and one of the charities we support is the Providence Ronald McDonald House. I lead the quarterly themed dinners we prepare for the guests of the house so this run and raising money for this cause is near to my heart.

The first race I ran, I went all out. I actually hurt my neck while I was running it because I was so tense. I managed to run really fast (for me), but I paid for it later. Over the past year I have worked to increase my distance and managed 2 half marathons, but now I want to start to work on my speed! I want to keep a record of the races I run each year. i was going to do calendar years, but since I started with this race last year I will do October to October and see how I improve over time.

10/2/11          PRMH 5k Women's Classic      28:44       9:17 pace
10/30/11        Monster Mini Dash 5k               30:10      9:44 pace
4/15/12          MS Rhode Race                         31:26     10:08 pace
5/20/12          Pawtucket Cherry Tree 1/2      2:12:08    10:06 pace
9/16/12          Surftown 1/2 marathon            2:16:17    10:24 pace
10/7/12          PRMH 5k Women's Classic      27:00       8:43 pace

I am so excited to have a new 5k personal record. I didn't think it was going to happen considering my kids were both sick and keeping me up all night since Thursday! The coolest thing about doing half marathons and having to do the long runs to train for them is that 3 miles starts to seem like a drop in the bucket. I told myself, when I started, to go all out (without injuring myself again) because it was "just" 3 miles. I never thought 3 miles would seem like a "just" in my mind. Getting healthy hasn't been easy, but it has been rewarding.

And now for a little laugh, here is my race pic from Sunday. Apparently he snapped the pic just as my foot hit the ground and I appear to be power walking rather than running. Rest assured, I was running. Fast. Ok, well, fast for me. :)
