Running on Empty

Everyone knows what the little icon in this picture is, right? We are all familiar with the gas light. It comes on when you are running low on gas. Most car manufacturers know human nature and give you the courtesy of a few gallons left when you hit this point. So, I have a burning question. How is it possible, given the warning, to run out of gas? I am happy to say, I have never run out of gas. The closest I came was literally coasting into the gas station on fumes when I was lost and couldn't find a gas station AND I didn't even have a gas light in that car. My husband, however, has run out of gas SEVERAL times. His friends have also run out of gas. I can't recall any of my female friends telling me they have run out. They very well could have and were just too embarrassed to talk about it, but I don't know. I have this theory that the running out of gas gene resides on the Y chromosome and I'd like a little help in my "research". Take a second and answer my poll. Don't be embarrassed if you've done it, the poll is anonymous. I will only make fun of you in my head.

  1. I can honestly say I've never run out of gas! I've run on fumes before, but I've always made it to the gas station in time!

  2. I'm OCD. Half a tank and I fill it up. 1/4 tank is a HIGH ALERT in my head! LOL!

  3. Me neither!!! And I don't usually let it get under 1/4 tank either. I can't imagine!

  4. My hubs hasn't run out of gas, but he often gets shockingly close. Strangely enough, I--the one who's so careful--did. But it was my car's fault, not mine. The tank didn't look like it was on empty. I should have had enough to get to the gas station.

So who rescues these men when they run out?

  5. You already know my answer, don't you? I thought so. I voted anyway.

  6. I have never run out of gas, but I have come close. My hubs, on the other hand, has had to get rescued.

  7. I actually ran out in college once. But I drove this pretty old Buick and I don't think the gauge even worked anymore.

At least that is the story I am sticking with... ;)

  9. Ok, ok, it was me!!! I ran out of gas when I was younger (and much more foolish, right?) Was ALMOST to the gas station, but died on the overpass. Luckily, it was dark and I couldn't see anyone laughing at me. And I didn't mind so much the hunky police officer stopping to "check me out" - I mean, check things out. : )

I honestly don't think Chad's run out of gas. But we coasted down a lonnnng hill after an evening hilltop wedding in Oregon (where full service is the deal), with no gas station in sight. I was sweatin' it the whole time!

  10. Going below 1/4 tank causes me stress, so I just go ahead and fill it up.

  12. It's always a tough pass to have that almost empty symbol blaring at your dashboard at the most inopportune moment. There are instant ways out of that, though, and often they wouldn't seem so out of reach, with emergency refuelings on-call. I hope you folks will be able to avoid that scenario in the future, as much as possible, or if you do lunge head on into those binds, then at least have the remedies on ready.
